Use the control that matches the actual risk
A password limits opening, redaction removes visible sensitive content, metadata cleaning removes document properties, and flattening removes interactivity. These operations solve different problems and should not be described as interchangeable security.
Control who can open a copy
Add a strong, unique PDF password and send it through a different channel. Encryption does not remove secrets that an authorized reader can see.
Remove sensitive page content
Use secure redaction and inspect every marked area in the exported copy. Cropping or placing a black shape over text is not secure removal.
Clean document properties
Remove Info and XMP metadata as one release check, while remembering that filenames, attachments, page content, and external systems can still reveal information.
