How to Resize PDF Pages to A4, Letter, or a Custom Size

Separate page resizing from file compression
Resize PDF changes the physical dimensions of each page, such as moving from a slide-shaped sheet to A4 or from Letter to a custom label size. Compress PDF reduces the number of bytes used to store the file. These goals are related only indirectly. A PDF can have small physical pages and a large file size because it contains high-resolution images, or large pages and a small file size because it contains simple vector text. Identify whether a printer, upload portal, binder, or viewer is rejecting page geometry or total bytes before choosing a tool.
Cropping solves another problem. It changes the visible page box and can remove unwanted margins from view, but it may leave hidden content in the document. Scaling places the visible source page inside a new page size. Printing settings can also fit a document to paper without permanently changing the PDF. If you only need a one-time printout, printer scaling may be enough. Permanently resize pages when downstream systems require consistent geometry, when several source sizes must become one standard, or when the new dimensions are part of the actual deliverable.
Choose A4, Letter, Legal, or custom dimensions
A4 measures 210 by 297 millimeters and is common in most countries. US Letter measures 8.5 by 11 inches, while US Legal is 8.5 by 14 inches. The difference between A4 and Letter is small enough to be overlooked but large enough to change line placement, margins, and printing. Use the specification provided by the receiving organization rather than guessing from the current page appearance. For forms, labels, books, or production work, enter the exact custom width and height supplied by the template owner.
Orientation changes how those dimensions are arranged. Portrait pages are taller than they are wide, while landscape pages are wider. Automatic orientation can preserve the general direction of each source page, which is useful for reports that mix portrait text with landscape tables. A fixed orientation creates a consistent document but may add large margins around pages with the opposite shape. Review mixed-orientation sources before choosing one setting for all pages. If a page is already rotated incorrectly, fix its rotation before resizing so the content and target orientation agree.
Understand fit, fill, stretch, and margins
Fit entire page uses one scale factor so the complete source remains visible. It preserves proportions and is the safest default, but it can leave whitespace on two sides. Fill and crop uses a larger uniform scale so the new page is completely covered; content that extends beyond the target edges is clipped. This can work for full-bleed artwork but may remove page numbers, signatures, or table columns. Stretch changes width and height independently and can distort circles, text, logos, and photographs. Use it only when exact filling is more important than correct proportions.
Margins reduce the area available for source content and create a consistent buffer around it. They are useful for printers that cannot reach the paper edge, punched documents, binding, reviewer notes, and portal templates. A margin also makes mixed source sizes look more deliberate. Too much margin can shrink small text below a comfortable reading size. Start with no margin or a modest value, inspect the most detailed page, and increase only when the workflow requires it. When the source already contains whitespace, adding another margin may be unnecessary.
Know which PDF features may not survive rebuilding
Reliable page scaling often rebuilds each source page as a form-like visual object on a new sheet. This preserves the visible appearance but may not preserve links, comments, annotations, form fields, layers, attachments, bookmarks, accessibility tags, or other interactive structures. Existing digital signatures will no longer validate because the document bytes and page structure have changed. If those features matter, test a representative file before resizing a full collection and keep the signed or interactive original as the authoritative copy.
Selectable text can remain visually sharp when the source page is embedded as vector content, but reading order and accessibility information may not follow into the rebuilt page. Rotated crop boxes, unusual media boxes, transparency groups, or damaged PDFs can also produce unexpected placement. Repair structural errors first when the file does not open consistently. For archival requirements, resizing alone does not create PDF/A compliance. Use a dedicated archival conversion and validation process after confirming that the visual resized copy is the version that should be preserved.
Review dimensions and content after export
Open the resized PDF and inspect document properties or the print dialog to confirm the intended page dimensions. Check the first page, last page, every orientation change, and pages with content close to the edges. Compare small text, diagrams, barcodes, signatures, and table columns with the source. Use print preview at actual size when physical output matters. If Fill and crop was selected, verify that no required content was clipped. If Stretch was used, compare familiar shapes and text proportions to catch distortion quickly.
Confirm page count and order, then test any links, form fields, comments, or accessibility behavior the recipient expects. If file size is still above a portal limit, compress the resized result and review it again rather than changing page geometry repeatedly. Use a filename that identifies the new paper size and keep the original. A safe PDF resizing workflow begins with the destination specification, chooses a proportional fit whenever possible, treats interactive features as at risk, and ends with both visual and dimensional verification before the derivative is printed, submitted, or archived.
