WebP can make an existing JPG easier to deliver on the web, but a new container cannot restore detail that JPEG compression already removed. The conversion runs locally in this browser.
Choose lossy or lossless WebP intentionally
Lossy WebP can reduce download size further when a small visual change is acceptable. Lossless WebP preserves the JPG's current decoded pixels exactly, but it may not be smaller because the source already contains JPEG artifacts and compressed photographic detail.
Compare the file at its publishing size
Check faces, product labels, fine patterns, gradients, and small text at the intended display dimensions. Compare bytes as well as appearance; keep the JPG when the WebP is not meaningfully smaller or the destination does not support WebP.
Keep a compatible fallback when needed
Modern browsers support WebP broadly, but some document tools, upload forms, email workflows, and older applications still expect JPG. Preserve the original and use the converted file only where the receiving system accepts it.
