Choose format and quality together
Photographs usually tolerate lossy JPG or WebP compression better than screenshots, logos, and diagrams. Transparent graphics need PNG or WebP support. Reducing dimensions can save more space than lowering quality when an image is much larger than its display area.
Inspect difficult regions
Check text edges, faces, gradients, shadows, and high-contrast lines for ringing or blocks. Compare the original and output at normal display size, then keep the smaller file only when those details remain acceptable.
